Ulster Heritage Magazine: Family Finder Autosomal DNA Sale. Very good price...

For those with McCain ancestry through your maternal side, here is a very good offer on Family Tree's autosomal DNA test, call the Family Finder test, which both men and woman can take (it does not use the Y chromosome).  Keep in mind, it is only good for connections of the 4th Cousin degree or closer.

Hi Barry

I wonder - my father's mother was Claire McCain, we have located a family of McKane's still in Mountbolus, Co Offaly Ireland where my great grandfather emigrated to England from in the1850s - we believe we are related but haven't found the records to link us yet. If both my father and Joe McKane took the test would that help?

that atDNA is good to about fourth cousin level. It would be right on the cusp of have usable data. But you could try. Another strategy would be getting Claire McCain's line of McCain men to test for you with the Y chromosome test, that would we can follow back for thousands of years, so would easily tell you which McCain family they belong to. We do have some McCains from the Offaly area, but they are part of the Mac Canna family and just anglicised as McCain. Usually McCain is the anglicised form of Mac Eáin, but Mac Canna and Mac Catháin also are anglicised as McCain sometimes.

Thanks Barry - unfortunately the male McCain line from Claire's family have all died out, they were few and far between anyway and many didn't marry or have any children. The McKane's I've found in Offaly are also on the edge - only Joe and his son left. Perhaps this is the last chance!
